Teaching Your Child to Ride in 5 Simple Steps

Learning to ride a bike is a milestone moment. Here’s a proven five-step method that gets most kids riding independently within an afternoon.
Step 1 — Lower the saddle: Your child should be able to put both feet flat on the ground while seated. Step 2 — Remove the pedals (if using a pedal bike) and practice walking, then gliding with feet up for 3-5 seconds. Step 3 — Practice braking: Teach them to stop smoothly using both the hand brake and their feet. Step 4 — Reattach pedals and have them push off with one foot, then pedal. Step 5 — Practice turning in wide circles, gradually tightening the radius.
Choose a flat, open, traffic-free area — an empty parking lot or park path is ideal. Keep sessions short (15-20 minutes) to avoid frustration, and always celebrate small wins!
